Emptying 

• Jesus left behind his:

  • Omnipresence – He could only be in one place at a time 

  • Omniscience – He didn’t know everything 

  •  Omnipotence – he didn’t have access to his divine power 

• Jesus emptied himself of control 

• We must empty ourselves of the illusion of control 

Fear Not 

How many times does the Bible challenge us to “fear not”? 365

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.

1 Samuel 16:13

…while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.

David’s Prayer of Lament (Psalm 56) 

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? 

Psalm 56:3-4

• We can empty ourselves of the illusion of control when we trust that God is bigger than our fears. 

Jesus invites his followers to give up the illusion that we have control over what happens to us and then entrust our life to the only one who is actually stronger than the storms we face.

God grant me the serenity…  

…to accept the things I cannot change 

…the courage to change the things I can change 

…and the wisdom to know the difference
