When Insiders Get in the Way | Tim Harlow

You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

Matthew 23:33

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.

Matthew 23:13

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, ‘Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’ The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Mark 11:15-18

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Mark 11:11

…zeal for your house consumes me…

Psalm 69:9

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved.

John 3:16-17

Key Question: What is God’s call on my life?

Key Verse:  The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. (Psalm 24:1-2)

Key Idea: “I believe everything I am or own belongs to God.”

God doesn’t need what we have, so our giving must be for our sake. (Ps. 50)

God is not asking us to accomplish great things but to be faithful to invest what he has given us for him. (Matthew 25:14-15)

God may not give us more because we have not been faithful with what we have. (Matthew 25:16-23)

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:9-10)

Is there enough evidence to indict you as a Christian? (Matthew 25:17-30)

Key Question: How does God see us?

Key Idea: I believe all people are loved by God and need Jesus Christ as their Savior

Key Verse: God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

“I believe all people are loved by God…

  • You are a whoever…so is everyone else.

  • We need to see people the way God sees them.

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:11)

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. (James 3:9)

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

…and need Jesus Christ as their savior”

  • If people don’t believe in Jesus nothing else really matters

  • You don’t need to clean up to come in; you come in to clean up.

  • Come as you are, knowing God has no intention of keeping you there.

Question: What is the image of God that is hanging your mental gallery?

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

A.W. Tozer

KEY QUESTION: DOES GOD CARE ABOUT ME?

Big Idea: I believe God is involved in and cares about my daily life.

THE TWO MOVEMENTS OF GENESIS 16: FIRST GOD SEES HAGAR AND SECOND, HAGAR SEES GOD.

pg 30

The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” Genesis 16:7

GOD SEES HAGAR BY FINDING HER.

GOD SEES HAGAR BY CALLING HER BY NAME.

GOD SEES HAGAR BY ENGAGING THE DETAILS OF HER LIFE.

pg 31

to your mistress and submit to her.”

10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:

“You are now pregnant

and you will give birth to a son.

You shall name him Ishmael,[a]

for the Lord has heard of your misery.

Pg 31,

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

I lift up my eyes to the mountains -

where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2

MOVE #1: FIRST GOD SEES ME.

Transcendence: God is up above everything. He is independent of and superior to the rest of the universe.

MOVE #2: THEN I SEE GOD.

What is the ultimate image of God that Jesus is seeking to paint in the gallery of our hearts? Abba

PG 41

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:26-27

Immanence: God is present and active in nature and history. Quite simply God is near.

First, God sees you.

In what area of your life are you on Broken Boulevard? Where do you need to just admit you are lost and need found?

How can you be still this week and listen for God to speak your name?

How can you be more open to and aware of God’s involvement in your life?

Then, you see God.

What warped images of God do you need to let go of?

How is the image of God in your heart too small?

How is the image of God in your heart too distant?

Key Question: Not, Is there a God?...but, Who is God?

Proof there is a God is found in creation. (Ps. 19:1-4; Romans 1:20)

Key Idea: I believe the God of the Bible is the only true God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

God’s proof is his promises kept and his power unleashed. (Joshua 24; 1 Kings 18:16-40, Acts 17:16-34)

What Do You Believe?

God proved he was your God when kept his promise to you by providing the way back to him through Jesus Christ.

God proved he was your God when he unleashed his power and raised Jesus from the dead.

Who do you believe is the only true God?
