Creation

In the Upper Story, God creates the Lower Story to come down and do life with us.

The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it.

Genesis 3:12

Upper Story: The covering of our sin will require the shedding of another’s blood.

Cain & Abel

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Genesis 4:2-5

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Genesis 4:6-7

Lower Story: Humans hurt each other.

Upper Story: The sin nature of Adam is passed down.

The Flood

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

Genesis 6:5-7

Lower Story: Have faith in God.

Upper Story: The solution to getting us back will not come from even the best of us; it must come from another.
