God Builds a Nation

Teaching Notes

The Upper Story

God will build a nation where He shows us who He is and His plan to bring us back to Him.

The Lower Story:

Abraham’s trust in God grew from “I think I trust in God” to “I know I trust in God.”

The LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people, and your father’s house-hold to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing, I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all people on earth will be blessed through you.”

Genesis 12:1-3

Just close our eyes and take his hand.

Do not be afraid Abram, I am your shield, your very very great reward.

Genesis 15:1

“Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus! And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”

Genesis 15:2-3

The LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “so shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the LORD and he credited it to him as righteousness.”

Genesis 15:2-3

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

Genesis 22:1-2

Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Genesis 22:3-4

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Genesis 22:8-9

But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

Genesis 22:11-12

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Genesis 22:13-14

Our trust in God isn’t dependent on our work.

Our trust in God is dependent on His finished work.
