Teaching Notes

What image do you have of Jesus?

There are some incredible pictures of Jesus on Mark’s canvas in this section that covers 6:30-9:29:

  • Jesus as One who walks on water

  • Jesus as the liberator from false religion

  • Jesus as the healer of the demon possessed

  • Jesus as giver of sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf

  • Jesus as the challenger of religious hypocrisy

  • Jesus as the ultimate prophet

“I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

Mark 8:2-3

The word Mark uses here, translated “compassion” is the Greek word, splagnitsomai. It means “to be moved on the inside” – to feel something in the deepest place of human emotion – our gut. And his emotion moves him to action.

A side point - The only time  splagnitsomai is used in the NT other than describing Jesus is in the story of the Good Samaritan

“But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”

Mark 8:4

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.

Mark 8:5

Jesus essentially says, “Cheer up! There’s plenty of food for everyone!”

“Do you have eyes but fail to see?”

Mark 8:18

You are

Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper

Light in the darkness

My God, that is who you are

“Who do people say I am?”

Mark 8:27

“Who do you say I am?”

“You are the Messiah.”

Mark 8:29

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

Mark 8:31

“Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

Mark 8:33
