Teaching Notes

Q: What scorecard am I using in my life?

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Mark 9:33-35

World’s Scorecard: winners finish first

Jesus’ Scorecard:  winners finish last

And Jesus says, “...for whoever is not against us is for us.”

Mark 9:40

World’s Scorecard: winning comes through competition

Jesus’ Scorecard:  winning comes through commonality

“...at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’”

Mark 10:6

World’s Scorecard: marriage can end in dismissal

Jesus’ Scorecard:  marriage begins in dignity

Jesus’ Scorecard: the goal is now generosity

“You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:42-45

World’s Scorecard: we lead positionally

Jesus’ Scorecard:  we lead  sacrificially

“Jesus of Nazareth, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Mark 10:48

World’s Scorecard: some people are expendable

Jesus’ Scorecard: everyone is essential

The Quaker author Richard Foster writes, “Power can destroy or create. The power that destroys demands ascendency; it demands total control. It destroys relationships; it destroys trust; it destroys dialogue; it destroys integrity. And this is true whether we look through the macrocosm of human history or the microcosm of our own personal histories.” The Disciplined Life - Reflections on Money, Sex, & Power, pg. 176
