Teaching Notes

Jesus chooses the disciples to be in his family (3:13-19)

Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. (Mark 3:13)

Jesus’ own family rejects him (3:20-21)

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” (Mark 3:21)

For even his own brothers did not believe in him. (John 7:5)

“…A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” (Mark 6:4)

Jesus chooses us to be in his family (3:35)

Just a few minutes later Jesus declared, “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:35)

“Daughter, daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” (Mark 5:34)

Cheer up, I choose you

Cheer up, I choose you

Cheer up, I choose you

Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. (Hebrews 2:11)
