The Story for the Whole Family

Teaching Notes

The Bible is like a mural that tells a single story.

But…the Bible doesn’t read like a story.

The Vision behind The Story

Once you see the story it will change your life.

So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts, during the Festival of Tabernacles, when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Deuteronomy 31:9-13

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

The Five Movements of the Story

The Story of the Garden (Genesis 1-11)

God’s grand vision behind creation was to create a walled garden to come down and do life with us but we rejected that vision and sin enters into our veins and were escorted out of the garden. The rest of the story unfolds God’s plan to get us back into the garden.

The Story of Israel (Genesis 12 – Malachi)

God creates a new nation from scratch. Every story of Israel points to the first coming of Jesus, the solution to getting us back.

The Story of Jesus (Matthew – John)

God comes down and wraps himself in flesh to represent us and does for us what we could not do for ourselves – wash us clean of the sin. Those who embrace this gift of grace through faith come into an eternal relationship with God.

The Story of the Church (Acts – Jude)

God creates a new community. Every story of the Church points to the second coming of Jesus where he will establish his new kingdom on earth.

The Story of the Garden (Revelation)

Jesus returns to create a new heaven and a new earth. All who believed in Jesus in this life will be eternal resident in a city called the New Jerusalem. In the center of this walled city, flowing from the throne of God is the garden.
