Life & Death

Teaching Notes

The path of life leads upward for the prudent

to keep them from going down to the realm of the dead.

Proverbs 15:24

“The Old Testament looks at the subject in depth: death is a whole realm in conflict with life, rather than a single and merely physical event.” - Derek Kidner, “Proverbs”

The Proverbs…

1. Inspire us towards our best life

  • Relationships:

Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

Proverbs 21:21

  • Health & Wellness

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Proverbs 14:30

  • Moral/Spiritual

For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord. But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.”

Proverbs 8:35-36

  • The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives (Proverbs 11:30)

“The expression ‘the way of life’...is a route that leads to, or is marked by, one’s being truly and fully alive. - Derek Kidner, Proverbs pg50

2. Provoke Regret

  • The Power of Regret by Daniel Pink

    4 Types of Regret:

    1. Foundation: “If only I’d done the work.”

    2. Bold: “If only I’d taken the risk.”

    3. Moral: “If only I’d done the right thing.”

    4. Connection: “If only I’d reached out.”

 3. Point us to grace.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:17

When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,

but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.

Proverbs 14:32

Going Deeper

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:17

In Dan's message, he spoke to the idea of law and karma. It is that each action incurs an equal and opposite reaction. You break the law and you get the consequences of a lawbreaker. You ARE a lawbreaker. Or in karma, what goes around comes around. The trajectory of your life is unalterably determined by the choices, good or bad, that you previously made.

He then speaks of the grace that Jesus introduces. In Jesus' grace one does not get the negative consequences one has earned.

  1. How do you deal with regret in your life? Do you dwell on them? Seek to deny them?

  2. What have been some of the best insights from the Proverbs Journey for you over the course of this series?

  3. How much has a “karma theology” seeped into your thinking about life?

  4. What is one way that you are literally living on and clinging to grace in your life?
