Teaching Notes
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
Acts 1:6-8
Going Deeper Discussion
Jesus is giving his disciples marching orders as they are tell the world the good news. From the above verse (Acts 1:6-8):
1. What kind of kingdom did the disciples expect? What kind of kingdom will Jesus deliver?
2. Jesus says they will receive power from the Holy Spirit. Power to do what?
3. When Jesus talks about these locations, it appears they expand in concentric circles. Why do you think that is?
4. The Samaritans and the Jews had great historic animosity towards each other. They didn't share the same values, beliefs, or cultural understandings. They were "those" people. Who are "those" people in your life right now? What do you think Jesus is calling you to do towards them? Is that a hard thing? How would you begin to go about doing it?
5. How does Jesus called us to see the world? And how does he empower us to be a blessing in it?
