On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it? Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?"
John 6:60-61
When's the last time that Jesus has offended you?
GET OFFENDED!
If you’re not being regularly offended by Jesus, then it’s likely that you’re not following the real Jesus.
Two Reasons Why We Must Get Offended:
1. Jesus wants to confront our idols.
Theology
Christianity • Politics
Lifestyle
Sensibilities
Etc.
2. Jesus wants us to grow more into his image.
But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
1 John 2:5-6
I am the bread of life. (- Jesus, John 6:48)
The Seven “I AM’s” of Jesus:
I am the light of the world (John 8:20)
I am the door (John 10:9)
I am the good shepherd (John 10:11,14)
I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
I am the vine (John 15:1,5)
I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
And now, I am the bread of life...
God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.”
Exodus 3:14
HOW JESUS OFFENDS:
[Jesus] came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
Grace: The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent. (John 6:29)
Truth: But as I’ve told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. (John 6:36)
The bottom line is this:
Truth without grace becomes toxic
Grace without truth has no power
If you’re a Gracer, Jesus will offend you with Truth.
If you’re a Truther, Jesus will offend you with Grace.
HOW TO GET OFFENDED:
Read the gospels. Repeatedly.
Invite his Spirit to offend. Repeatedly.
He’ll bring conviction to your spirit
Search me, God, and know my heart; put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
Psalm 139:23-24
4. Join others who do too. Repeatedly.
Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.
