A Few Good Men and Women

Teaching Notes

There is a place in the story for you.

The Judges in the Bible are actually pretty normal people called to do a God thing in their world, in their day.

God chooses to have us walk straight into our fears until they lose their power over us.

Do you ever think, God can’t use me.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Corinthians 4:7-9

The Israelites were to completely drive out the pagan Canaanites from the Land. But they didn’t.

After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.

Judges 2:10

God sent the leaders we call the Judges.

Remember, You and God are always a majority! You don’t ever need to be intimidated when God is leading and you obey.

The Story of Gideon

Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help. The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”

Judges 6:6, 11-16

One of the most important things you could ever do for your identity is to see yourself as God sees you.

Have you ever said to God, Who me?

First Gideon wrestled with if God wanted to use him.

Then Gideon then he wrestled with how God would use him.

Whenever he wants to do something big he almost always stacks the odds against his team.

The Mideanites said, no way; but the Israelites said, “Yahweh”

The question is not IF He wants to use you, It’s HOW?

The Israelite soldiers had to break their jars for the light to shine.

God calls all of us to live on mission right where we live, learn, work and play.

God wants every person in Kansas City to hear the Good News of Jesus from a friend.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

2 Corinthians 4:7a

The world is going to say, no way!  But you are going to say, Yahweh!
