PORT ELIZABETH | URBAN TOWNSHIPS

Walmer, Wells Estate, & New Brighton Townships

These three townships are located in the City of Port Elizabeth. The communities are overpopulated with hundreds of thousands of people living in dilapidated government housing and scrap wood, cardboard and metal shacks. Unemployment is high, as are the rates of HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse, child neglect, teenage pregnancy, gang violence, violent crime, and illiteracy. Many of the areas we serve have no running water, electricity, or sanitation. Our Care Centers are in the heart of the townships— in community centers or close to local schools. We have around 200 children in our programs here. Our Care Centers provide daily after-school tutoring, extra-curricular sports activities, youth worship and bible study programs, and a meal for our kids after school each day. We do regular home visits with all our children and know their life-stories and challenges. All our children attend school and we are working hard to ensure that each child will complete their education with a skill that will launch them into their future.

TRANSKEI | RURAL VILLAGES

River of Life, Kwa-Dick, & Magwambu

One Life has 3 Care Centers in the heart of the Transkei —the rural homelands of the Xhosa people. Our centers are in local villages in the mountains facing the India Ocean, on land that has been gifted to us by tribal chiefs. We have around 100 children in the Transkei. Life is slower here and simple, but with no infrastructure, it is also hard. Water is accessed from communal taps —when there is water, and cooking is done on open fires. Education is poor and under resourced. Unemployment is high and access to medical care is minimal. Our Care Centers provide daily after-school tutoring, soccer and netball, youth worship and Bible study programs and a meal after school each day. All our children attend school and we are working hard to ensure that each child will complete their education with a skill that will launch them into their future.
