The Purpose of Patience
Teaching Notes
Let each one take care how he builds upon the foundation. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:10-11
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
1 Corinthians 2:1-2
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23
The Purpose of Patience
What is patience?
Patience is a fruit of God’s Spirit that empowers us to endure and grow through life’s challenges while maintaining our peace, hope, contentment, and trust in God.
Patience: Endurance, Perseverance, Long-Suffering; to remain steadfast through trials, tribulations, and discomfort.
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.
James 5:7
The seeds of transformation and growth are planted in the soil of patience.
Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, look to the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
James 5:10-11
Patience is about our perspective of the pain we experience in this life.
God never wastes a thing.
The purpose of patience is to transform us into the image of Christ and teach us to anchor our HOPE AND TRUST in the sovereignty of God and the goodness of Jesus.
Then Job replied to the Lord: “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. … and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me.
Job 42:1-3
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:2-4
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
