The Call and the Walk
Teaching Notes
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Ephesians 4:1-2
…That you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.
Ephesians 1:18
Walk in love as Christ loves us.
Ephesians 5:2
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.
Colossians 2:6
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:1-10
We have separated the call of God (the word/voice of God) from the reality of walking with God in our lives. We have separated the call of God from walking with God.
The Christian life is lived at the intersection of God’s “calling” and our “walking.”
A call without the walk is NOTHING.
We have separated the call of God (the voice of God) from the reality of our lives.
The Bible is a word, a call from God, to be listened to and obeyed. It’s a living and active and authoritative WORD that is meant to get us moving/acting/walking/living in alignment with God’s will for our lives.
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
Ephesians 2:1-2
We live in a world where human beings, left to themselves, not only choose the wrong direction, but remain cheerfully confident that it is in fact the right one. Indeed, people regularly point out, as evidence of its being the right one, how confident they are on the subject. They say in defense, “Look at all my fellow travelers on this road!
NT Wright
Blindly following the desires of the physical body, and the mind, will lead us to ruin.
NT Wright
Actually, that’s how all of us used to live, following our physical desires. We used to do what our flesh and our minds were urging us to do. What was the result? We too were subject to wrath in our natural state, just like everyone else.
Ephesians 2:3
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already,
John 3:17-18
Things were far worse than most of us imagine, but we are far more loved than we could possibly dream.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
