What is it that distinguished Israel from all those other peoples who no longer exist? Israel had The Book.
“Time and again we have given practical proof of our reverence for our own scriptures. It is an instinct with every Jew, from the day of their birth to regard them as the decrees of God, to abide by them and, if need be, cheerfully die for them. Time and again the sight has been witnessed of prisoners enduring torture and death rather than utter a single word against them. What Greek (Gentile) would endure as much for the same cause? KEY IDEA: I BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD THAT GUIDES MY BELIEFS AND ACTIONS.
Key Verse: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 1 Peter 1:20-21
For the reason, Jesus consistently uses the phrases “Scripture says” and “God says” interchangeably.
For this reason, Jesus held that “Scripture cannot be broken” (Jn 10:35).
For this reason, Jesus taught, “Until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished” (Mt 5:18; cf. Lk 16:17).
For this reason, Jesus based his teachings and stories on hundreds of references to the Old Testament.
For this reason, when people were in error on theological matters, Jesus said it was because they didn’t know Scripture well enough (Mt 22:29).
For this reason, Jesus considered himself the interpretive key to the Scriptures.
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24:25-27
