Teaching Notes

Symphony: pleasing or sweet sound

Cacophony:  a harsh discordant mixture of sounds.

Sounds of Cacophony

“If everyone is entitled to their own facts, to their own truths, then there’s really no need to come together.”

-The Social Dilemma

ONE COMPOSER

ONE SCORE

ONE ORCHESTRA...called the Church.

Corinthians

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:1

Galatians

“The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.”

Galatians 5:10

Romans

I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.

Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia. Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was…Greet one another with a holy kiss.

All the churches of Christ send greetings.

Romans 16:1-7:16

Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Jews. I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord. Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings. Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings.

Romans 16:21-23

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Galatians 3:28

NEW: SYMPHONY HAPPENS THROUGH UNITY

SYMPHONY happened through relationship.

TESTAMENT: SYMPHONY ONLY HAPPENS UNDER ONE MAESTRO

Paul says four times that they are “in Christ” and five times they are “in the Lord.”

CHALLENGE: WE EACH HAVE A PART TO PLAY!

...saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a great roar, “Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living beings. And they fell before the throne with their faces to the ground and worshiped God. They sang,“ Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Revelation 7:10-12

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

-Jesus, Matthew 6:10

What is your role to play?

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

1 Corinthians 1:10

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Ephesians 4:3-6

Going Deeper Discussion

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

1 Cor. 1:10

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism;one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Ephesians 4:3-6

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

John 17:20-21

  1. What is it that unites us all as Christ followers?

  2. What are some of the things that can divide us?

  3. What are some ways that we can overcome these divisions? In other words, how can we major on the majors and minor on the minors?

  4. In the passage above from John 17, what did Jesus say about unity amongst believers?

  5. What are some practical steps we can take to walk in greater with other Christ followers?
