4 Examples of Singlemindedness
Peter & Storms
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” (Pg. 233; Matthew 14:25-31)
Application: When you are in the middle of a storm (circumstances), focus on the one who can save you, not the waves and the wind.
Peter & Tough Decisions
Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!...
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” (pg. 235, Acts 5:29, 38,39)
Application: When you are faced with a tough decision, choose God
King Jehoshaphat & Battles
…for we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” (pg. 230; 2 Chronicles 20:12)
Application: When you are in an unavoidable but necessary battle (people), get your marching orders from God.
The Magi & Direction
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
