  • Where do I fit? (Belonging)

  • Who am I? (Identity)

  • What am I made for? (Calling)

UNCHARTED QUESTION #1: Where do I fit? (Belonging)

“She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Exodus 2:6

“One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor...”

Exodus 2:11

Ruth Haley Barton: “He lived between two worlds and yet was not fully at home in either place.”

UNCHARTED QUESTION #2: Who am I? (Identity)

He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.” When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian…”

Exodus 2:11-15

V.11 - “One of his own people.”

“...and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”

Exodus 2:22

Moses’ Identity Statement:

  • He’s a foreigner in a foreign land

  • He’s a fugitive to his adopted people, the Egyptians

  • He’s a fraud to his bio people, the Hebrews

How Moses’ Uncharted Questions Get Answered:

One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.”

When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

“Here I am!” Moses replied.

“Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.

Exodus 3:1-6

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

  • V11: Moses asks God a great question: Who am I?

And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

  • V.13 Then Moses asks of God an even better one: Who are you?

But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.

Exodus 3:13-15

  • "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." (Revelation 4:8)

  • Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  (Hebrews 13:8)

Moses, the fugitive, has encountered the forever

  • A heavenly Father who is the father of all; from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. (Ephesians 3:15)

  • God’s Forever Family: that, in Christ, we all belong to

    • A heavenly Father who is the father of all; from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. (Ephesians 3:15)

UNCHARTED QUESTION #3: What am I made for? (Purpose)

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.
