Questions About God

Q+A

Teaching Notes

What comes to mind when you think about God, is the most important thing about you.

A.W. Tozer

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.

Genesis 1:11

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:20-21

God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:25

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”… God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Genesis 1:26, 28

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Genesis 1:31

God is the most joyful being in all the universe.

Dallas Willard

For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

Romans 8:20-21

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

Romans 8:22-23

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:1-5

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

John 3:16-17

Where did God come from?

The LORD is my shepherd…

Psalm 23

LORD = YHWH = “I Am,” Self-subsistent, eternal being.

God is a being who cannot not be.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Psalm 90:2

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:15-17

…before Abraham was born, I am!

John 8:58

God knows things that we don't know and has a perspective that we can't have.

What is the purpose of prayer if God’s will and purpose is unchanging? How can prayer change anything?

This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven,…”

Matthew 6:9

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Matthew 7:9-11

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Matthew 7:7

Does God change His mind?

It appears that he does.

He allows us to affect him as all relationships do.

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16

I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them... But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, … Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. …Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

Exodus 32:9-14

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:12-13

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

Hebrews 1:3

My faith is in the character of God, perfectly revealed in Jesus, rather than my capacity to know God’s mind.

Why did God create us in the first place?

…God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16

God made you so He could love you and so you and I could love Him!

What motive and fundamental basis did he have to create more things to worship him when had all of heavens angels?

Worship is for us.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Romans 12:1

“True and proper” = logikos = reasonable, rational, logical.

When we worship, we recognize that:

  • He is God and we are not.

  • God is Creator and we are created.

  • God is love and we are beloved.
