Making a Difference

Teaching Notes

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.

Matthew 5:13 MSG

We are Salt

  • Creates thirst for God

  • Preserves what is good

  • Heals wounds

  • Brings out flavor with each bite

Recommendation: Jump in the saltshaker with other believers at your work

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 MSG

We are Light

  • Bring your light out of the closet

  • Shed light on the truth

  • Illuminate the path to God

Recommendation:  Make sure your spiritual batteries are charged

Going Deeper Discussion

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
1 Peter 3:15-16

Randy's message this week encouraged us all to walk with integrity in our workplaces and seek to be a blessing there. From first Peter above, the author is encouraging us to behave in a way that honors Jesus in our public lives.

  1. How should it motivate our interactions with coworkers when we "revere Christ as Lord" in our hearts?

  2. If someone were to inquire about "the hope that you have," what would be the evidence of that hope in your work life?

  3. Why does Peter encourage us to frame our answer with "gentleness and respect?" What would be the opposite of that posture?

  4. What does it mean to "keep a clear conscience" in your workplace? In what ways could you be tempted to compromise your conscience?

  5. How should we then view our workplaces in light of Randy's message and the above verses? How would you summarize it in just a few words?
