Jesus' Ministry Begins
Teaching Notes
Inauguration Day
But four very significant things happen you shouldn’t miss.
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph.
Luke 3:21-23
We have the appearance of the Trinity all together
The Father anoints his Son.
The Holy Spirit descends and remains with Jesus
John declares him the Passover Lamb
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
John 1:29
The Next 40 Days
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Matthew 4:1-2
Jesus is following the lead of the Spirit.
This is a redo of Genesis 3.
We fight temptation by knowing and living by the Word of God
Satan:
“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Matthew 4:3
“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down…”
Matthew 4:6
“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.
Matthew 4:9
Jesus:
It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
Deuteronomy 8:3
It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’
Deuteronomy 6:16
Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’
Deuteronomy 6:13
The First Miracle
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:1–5
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’
John 2:6–8
‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’
John 2:10
There are two things going on here:
Jesus interrupts the laws of nature to give us a sign of who he is.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:1-3
Jesus is fulfilling Old Testament prophecies and pointing us to another wedding party to come.
On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine—the best of meats and the finest of wines.
Isaiah 25:6
