From Shepherd to King

Teaching Notes

How did God see David?

He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.

Psalm 78:70-72

When God instructed the prophet Samuel to search for a new king to replace Saul, this was his guidelines:

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

God looked at his heart and declared him to be “a man after God’s own heart.”

How did others see David?

Others saw this shepherd boy, but they did not see a king.

His dad didn’t see it.

His oldest brother didn’t see it.

Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.

1 Samuel 17:28

Saul couldn’t see it.

You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are little more than a boy…

1 Samuel 17:33

Goliath couldn’t see it.

Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?

1 Samuel 17:43

David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.

1 Samuel 48

Jonathan saw it.

Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

1 Samuel 18:4

All we need is one person who sees God’s plan for us.  Just one!

Boot camp for Kings

God can use our disobedient lives in the Lower Story to work out his Upper Story plan.

God will likely take us through a season of testing to equip us for the assignment ahead of us.

David reveals God’s plan

“Anointed” means “Messiah.”

David was the Messiah in the Lower Story.  His reign pointed us to the Messiah in the Upper Story.

Each story of the Old Testament points to Jesus

  • Passover Lamb – 10th plague

  • Savior – Joshua

  • Deliverer – Judges

  • Redeemer – Boaz

  • Messiah - David
