The Genealogy (Matthew 1:1-17)

This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham. (Matthew 1:1)

Abraham is the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers… (Matthew 1:2)

Outcast Author (Matthew 9:1-13)

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:12-13)

Going Deeper Discussion

The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1 contains a number of people who would've been questionable by the standard of Jesus' day.
The author, Matthew, would have been considered a traitor to his people as a tax collector. There are several gentile women (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba) in there which would've really raise the eyebrows of orthodox Jews. And you even have King David who was a murderer and an adulterer on top of being a pretty lousy father. All of these people were part of the plan that God had to bring us the Messiah!

  1. What does that tell you about the kind of people God can use?

  2. Have you ever felt as if someone you know was too far gone for God to redeem? Have you ever felt that way about yourself?

  3. Do you have any specific examples?

  4. What do you think God is saying about you and your family after hearing this message?

  5. What do you think I was asking you to do in light of this? Is there someone you need to encourage? Someone you need to forgive? Do you need to give yourself some grace?
