Teaching Notes

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

Hope is confidence in how our story ends.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

Faith in confidence in the one making the promises.

Abraham’s Story

Story #1 – Leaving Home

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.

Joshua 24:2

Story #2 – Sacrificing Isaac

By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”

Hebrews 11:17-18

Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

Hebrews 11:19

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

Genesis 22:2

Then Solomon began to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah…

2 Chronicles 3:1

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

Abraham lived out an Uncharted Faith

Application

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…

Hebrews 12:1

God is calling us into Uncharted Territory because we are living in Uncharted Times

Faith: We are kingdom risk-takers

What Uncharted Territory is God calling you into?

What Uncharted Territory is God calling our church into?

Prayer: We don’t move without prayer

Going Deeper Discussion

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3

The author writes this directly on the heels of Hebrews chapter 11 the great "Hall of Faith." He gives example after example of people who have come before us who walked in faith even though they had not yet received the promise of their faith.

  1. In the above verses what do you think the word "therefore" is there for? How is it a transition from Chapter 11 to chapter 12?

  2. What are some of the things in life that hinder us and entangle us keeping us from whole-heartedly "running the race" before us? In other words, what erodes our faith in living the abundant Christian life?

  3. How is "fixing our eyes" on Jesus helpful in this? How does his example energize and encourage us?

  4. What do you think "the joy set before him" means? What did Jesus set his heart on that he would endure the scorn and shame of the cross?
